UK's favourite 'Royles' at the The Pie Factory

Set for the award winning drama is constructed in the facilities at MediaCityUK

The 2009 Christmas special for the award winning comedy drama ‘The Royle Family’ was recently filmed at The Pie Factory, MediaCityUK.

The cast and crew of the hit drama spent two weeks filming in the Salford sound stage (one of three sound stages within The Pie Factory) for the one off special which will be aired on Christmas Day at 9pm on BBC One.

The Royle Family is made by Jellylegs Productions for the BBC on behalf Granada Television. It is written by Craig Cash and Caroline Aherne, who also star in the show alongside Ricky Tomlinson, Sue Johnston and Ralf Little.

Sinead Greenaway, CEO of the Peel Media group said: “It is the second year running that the Royle Family Christmas special has been shot at The Pie Factory and we were overjoyed to welcome the cast and crew back. The facilities provided a great space for the production to build the renowned set for a show that has become a highlight in the Christmas viewing calendar”.

The Pie Factory is owned and managed by Peel Media and was opened in January 2007.  The former cavernous warehouses now accommodate three sound stages taking up over 15,000sq ft and also incorporate a full costume department, make up rooms, dressing rooms, green rooms and office space together with 24/7 security and parking.

The Pie Factory has been the setting for numerous productions during 2009, including new thriller Paradox, which is currently showing on BBC1. It is also home to 16-media related companies, with broadcast systems firm TSL the latest to arrive earlier this month.
