
Top retailer opts for piece of the action at Media
Leading retailer WHSmith is to open a unit in the open centre at MediaCityUK, within Peel Media’s brand new studio facility.
Measuring 1,000 sq ft, the unit will sell a range of newspapers and magazines, stationery, books, confectionery and drinks to employees, residents, visitors and studio audiences.
Phase 1 of MediaCityUK, which will be completed in 2011, includes approximately 80,000 sq ft for retail and leisure use. The space will be divided into a range of units across the site. The open centre will feature a split level reception area that will house bars, cafés and an information point where visitors and studio audiences will be able to grab a bite to eat and learn more about what’s happening at MediaCityUK.
Bryan Gray, Chairman of the Peel Media Group said: “Ensuring we have the appropriate blend of retail outlets at MediaCityUK is paramount to creating the right ambience and building a city environment. WHSmith are a well-known high street brand and we are pleased that they will be serving the needs of visitors, residents and employees at MediaCityUK.”
Developed and managed by Peel Media, MediaCityUK will be home to around 5,000 workers, students, residents and visitors when Phase 1 is completed next year. This includes nearly 2,500 BBC staff, and 700 students and staff from the University of Salford.
The first newsagent in the Smith family name opened in 1792, and the company, WHSmith, was created in 1828. Today WHSmith has over 1000 stores, primarily in the UK, comprising over 565 high street stores and 490 retail units in airports, railway stations, hospitals, workplaces and motorway service areas.
