Peel Media responds to BBC announcements regarding MediaCityUK

118 more BBC employees to move to Salford Quays as well as BBC Breakfast and more comedy

Developer’s of MediaCityUK, Peel Media have today (15/07/10) responded to the BBC’s recent announcements about the move of BBC Breakfast and the re-location of an extra 113 BBC employees from London to Salford Quays.

This news has today been heightened by the announcement that 118 roles from Marketing, Communications & Audiences (MC&A) and Future Media & Technology (FM&T) will be moving here and that an additional two comedy shows will be commissioned from MediaCityUK by 2012/13.This news is testimony to the BBC's commitment to make their new home here at MediaCityUK a success”.

MediaCityUK will be a vibrant community of workers, residents, students and visitors.

It is being developed and managed by Peel Media, a division of the Peel Group, one of the leading property and transport companies in the UK, with an asset value in excess of £5 billion.

The BBC will move around 2,500 staff to MediaCityUK from 2011 and The University of Salford have committed to a new higher education centre at MediaCityUK, which will accommodate up to 1,500 students and staff.

At the centre of MediaCityUK is one of Europe’s biggest high definition studio complexes with a state-of-the-art communications infrastructure.

Phase one includes:

• Office space – 700,000 sq ft (65,032 sq m) (spread across five buildings)
• Studio block – 250,000 sq ft (23,225 sq m)
• Retail/leisure space – 80,000 sq ft (7,432 sq m) (divided into units)
• 378 apartments (divided between two towers)
• 218 bed Holiday Inn
• Five-acre public realm area, including piazza capable of holding 5,000 people
• Tram terminus, extending the current line
• Foot bridge across the Manchester Ship Canal, linking Salford Quays with Trafford Wharf
• 300 cycle bays
• Multi-storey car park with approximately 2,200 spaces
