FAQs

  • Who owns MediaCityUK?

MediaCityUK is being developed and managed by Peel Media, a division of the Peel Group. Peel Media will retain ownership of all the buildings in MediaCityUK.

  • How many jobs will MediaCityUK create?

A study carried out by Amion Consulting in 2006 suggested that ultimately MediaCityUK could accommodate more than 15,000 jobs and 1,000 businesses, once it is fully developed. At the completion of Phase 1 in 2011 there are likely to be 4,000 to 5,000 people working at MediaCityUK and we expect this figure to grow in line with MediaCityUK’s future development.

  • How can I find out about jobs at MediaCityUK?

We understand that there is huge excitement around MediaCityUK, and many people are keen to work here. However as Phase 1 won't be complete until 2011, it’s still too early to provide a detailed picture of employment opportunities. You can keep informed about the latest MediaCityUK developments – including announcements about businesses moving here – by signing up for our newsletter. If you are interested in working for a company who will be based at MediaCityUK, such as the BBC, you should contact them directly. Employment opportunities on the MediaCityUK construction site are managed by Salford Skills & Work – (0161) 603 6865. Peel Media – the company responsible for developing and managing MediaCityUK – will advertise its own vacancies on the job opportunities page of this website, where you will also find links to other sources of careers information.

  • Will MediaCityUK be a gated community?

The offices, apartments and studios will be subject to the usual building security controls, but there is no gated perimeter and MediaCityUK’s park, piazza, shops, bars and restaurants will be open to the public in the same way as any city centre.

  • What will the shops, bars and restaurants be like?

MediaCityUK will be home to a mixture of workers, students, residents and visitors, so we want to ensure that there’s a good selection of outlets, catering for different tastes (and budgets). Because Phase 1 of MediaCityUK won't be complete until 2011, it’s still too early for us to confirm exactly who will be here, but we’re already talking to a range of different companies – both well-known brands and independents. In fact, we recently submitted a planning application to extend a unit under our multi-storey car park so that it can become a Booths food store.

  • Isn’t MediaCityUK just some new buildings for the BBC?

The BBC is an important part of MediaCityUK – its hunt for a northern home sparked the original idea for the project – but this is about much more than one company. The University of Salford and Northwest Vision and Media have already confirmed that they will be at MediaCityUK, and we’re in discussions with other creative and digital businesses about moving here. And that’s before we mention The Pie Factory, which already houses around 15 media-related businesses. Ultimately, MediaCityUK will be a community made up of lots of different people, working for a range of different organisations. This isn’t something that will happen overnight – we expect the number of companies based here to grow gradually over time.

  • Will MediaCityUK be affected by the recession?

All the buildings designed for Phase 1 are being built – in fact, if you come down to Salford Quays today you’ll see that they already look very close to completion. MediaCityUK is a long-term development and although the current economic climate is challenging for everyone, our ambitions stretch well beyond the next few years.

  • Will it be ready on time?

Phase 1 is on schedule and we expect MediaCityUK to open in stages during 2011.

  • I know that Phase 1 will open in 2011, but what about future phases?

The current MediaCityUK construction site is just over 36 acres but we’ve earmarked up to 200 acres for future development. There isn’t a rigid timetable for Phase 2 so expansion will be dependent on demand.
