Salford Everyday Digital Heroes Competition

Tell the story of a local digital hero and stand a chance to win tech prizes for you and funding for your school. 

Competition closes: Monday, 17 November 2025, at 10:00 pm or when we reach 100 entries for each age category.

Description

We’re inviting young people across Salford to get creative and shine a spotlight on the people who keep our city running with the help of digital technology.

Your challenge is simple:

  • Find an Everyday Digital Hero, someone aged 18+ who lives or works in Salford and uses digital technology (hardware, software or tools) in their job or business.
  • Film a 2–3-minute interview of them, shining a spotlight on how digital technology helps them do what they do.
  • Submit your video to be in with a chance of winning amazing prizes for yourself and, if aged 11 –15, for your school.

This competition celebrates Salford’s people, creativity, and future as part of Salford’s 100th anniversary.

For ages 11–15

  • The top three winning entries will each receive a £500 technology voucher.
  • and £5,000 for their school to support digital and creative learning activities.

For ages 16–19

  • The top three winning entries will each receive a £500 technology voucher.
  • Winners will also be invited to exclusive creative and digital workshops hosted by the Media City Immersive Technologies Innovation Hub between December 2025 and March 2026.

Who can enter?

  • Young people aged 11–19 (living in or attending school/college in Salford).

Each person can submit only one entry.

How to enter

  1. Record a 2–3-minute interview with your Everyday Digital Hero.
  2. Make sure you ask the set of required questions (see below).
  3. Get the Hero’s consent, and parental consent if you’re under 18 to submit your video.
  4. Upload your video to YouTube as an Unlisted video. This means only people with the link (e.g. judges) can find it.
  5. Complete the entry form and paste your YouTube link where requested.

Mandatory Interview Questions

Every video must include the following questions. See them below:

●  What is your name, business name and your job title?

●  What is your first memory of using a digital device?

●  What was the first digital device you bought?

●  What digital technology do you use everyday in your job?

●  How has digital technology changed your work life in the last five years?

●  If you could invent one thing, what would it be / what challenge would it solve?

●  What advice or tips about digital technology would you give your younger self?

How to Submit Your Video

To keep entries secure and only viewable by the judges, we require all videos to be uploaded on YouTube as an Unlisted video.

This means:

  • Only people with the link can view your video (not public on YouTube).
  • It won’t appear in searches, your channel, or recommendations.
  • You keep full control and can delete it at any time (preferably after judging has been concluded or your entry will not be considered).

How to upload as “Unlisted” on YouTube:

  1. Sign in to YouTube with a Google account.
  2. Click Create → Upload Video.
  3. Upload your video file (MP4 or MOV recommended).
  4. In the Visibility section, select Unlisted (not Public or Private).
  5. Copy the video link and paste it in your entry form

  • Do not set your video to Public.
  • Do not include copyrighted music or content.
  • Make sure your content aligns with our Terms and Conditions.
  • You are responsible for ensuring consent from your Everyday Digital Hero (and from parents/guardians if you are under 18).

Top tips for filming your interview

  • Keep your video between 2 and 3 minutes long.
  • Film in a quiet, well-lit space.
  • Hold your phone sideways (landscape) if possible.
  • Use the questions provided, let your Hero do the talking.
  • Always get consent before filming.

Don’t use background music unless you create it yourself.

Q: Who can I choose as my Hero?
A: Anyone aged 18+ who lives or works in Salford and uses digital technology in their job.

Q: How long should my video be?
A: Between 2–3 minutes.

Q: Can I enter more than once?
A: No, only one entry per person.

Q: What file formats are accepted?
A: MP4, MOV, AVI.

Q: Can I edit the interview?
A: Yes, creativity is encouraged.

Q: Do I need consent?
A: Yes. You’ll need:

  • Parental/guardian consent to enter the competition if you are under 18.
  • Media consent from your Hero to allow their story to be shared.

Q: Do we need to answer every mandatory question?

A: Yes. All 7 of the mandatory interview questions must be asked and answered. Entries without the full set will not be eligible for judging. You can ask more questions but please keep the interview under 3 minutes.

 

Judging

Your entries will be reviewed by a panel with representatives from local organisations including MediaCity Immersive Technologies Innovation Hub, Salford City Council, MediaCity, Igloo Vision, Fuzzy Duck, 39 Pictures and the University of Salford.

Judges are looking for:

  • Immersive storytelling
  • Creativity
  • Originality
  • Enjoyment
  • Impact.
