MediaCityUK startup that shows where the surf’s up

A new website has launched, hoping to answer the prayers of kitesurfers everywhere. GeoRush – founded by SourceLab Technology based in The Landing at MediaCityUK – tackles the water sport’s biggest bugbear – bad weather. A revolutionary application crunches reams of data, including wind speed, water temperature and swell, to give the most accurate rating system yet of nearly one thousand kitesurfing destinations.

Kitesurfing is taking off in the UK and all around the world. Over the past decade membership of clubs has soared, while more and more stretches of coastline are catering for new enthusiasts. But like no other sport, kitesurfing depends on a heap of variable factors to ensure it’s totally awesome, meaning that up until now, you needed a maths degree to figure out the best locations on a given day.

GeoRush’s new web application promises to change all that. A clever algorithm processes continually updated weather information to generate a simple 0-10 rating for every kitesurfing destination on an expanding list – taking into account:

1. Wind Speed
2. Wind Direction
3. Water Temperature
4. Air Temperature
5. Swell
6. Tides

The data is gathered from respected local sources as well as the Global Forecast System. Founder, Paul Carey, says: “We’re all keen kitesurfers and software developers, so GeoRush was our way to take on the weather and win.”

“We were getting tired of heading out to a beach somewhere, putting the wetsuits on, and then waiting for a wind that would never come. Now kitesurfers can use this website to search destinations all over the world and plan their trips according to the most accurate forecast of the crucial conditions available. It’s a guaranteed adrenaline fix in a few little clicks!”
